An intercom (intercommunication device), is a stand-alone voice communications system for use within a building or small collections of buildings, functioning independently.  Video signals can be carried as well as voice. Many schools and office buildings use intercoms to identify visitors trying to gain access to the premises.

The Aiphone video hands-free master monitor station is an audio/video tenant station. It is equipped with a door release, option, guard, talk and off buttons. The unit also has pan/tilt/zoom control and a light adjustment button for the PTZ camera at the entry.

Video door phone intercoms are used to manage calls made at the entrance to a building with access controlled by audiovisual communication between the inside and outside. The main feature of video door entry is that it enables the person indoors to identify the visitor and, if they wish, engage in conversation or open the door to allow access to the person calling.

When a visitor calls, the tenant station rings and video is present on the 3.5 inch lcd monitor. The call is answered by one touch of the talk button. The Aiphone video hands-free master monitor station is designed to be surface mounted and has a slim, streamlined design. Up to four units can be used in the same tenant location (2 audio/video and 2 audio only). Communication is hands-free at the entrance station when a tenant answers the call and is either VOX hands-free or push-to-talk at the tenant station when speaking to the visitor.
