An electric fence needs to be earthed in order to operate effectively. The earth spike is used to earth the electric fence system. Even a powerful energizer will not be effective without good earthing.
The earth system consists of a number of earth spikes that provide an effective (low resistance) path for current to return to the energizers earth terminal. Larger energizers with large fence lines require more earthing rods.
For an electric fence shock the current produced by an energizer must complete a full circuit. The current leaves the energizer and moves along the fence wires through the person, into the soil and back to the energizer via the earth system. If the earth system is ineffective the person will receive an inadequate shock.
The earth spike is a galvanized or copper rod installed in the ground around an electric fence perimeter. An earth spike is used to earth the electric fence. The recommended depth for an earth spike is one meter. The first earth spike should be installed as close as possible to the energizer. The number of earth spikes that should be installed will depend on the length of the electric fence perimeter.
